Estrada Real

History

The Estrada Real is the country's biggest touristic route. More than 1,630 kilometers in length, it passes through Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. Today, the institution saves the route´s traditions valuing the region´s identity and beauty.

Its history began in the mid 18th century, when the Portuguese decided to formalize the routes for the transportation of gold and diamonds from Minas to the ports of Rio. The trails that were chosen by the royalty earned the name Estrada Real - “Royal Road.”

paths

Velho

Also called Caminho do Ouro (Gold Path), it was the first trajectory chosen by the royal family and linked Ouro Preto to Paraty.

Novo

Created as a safer road to Rio because cargo was subject to pirate attacks in the maritime route between Paraty and Rio.

Diamantes

The purpose of the road was to connect the headquarters of Capitania, Ouro Preto, to the main diamond mining site, Diamantina..

Sabarabuçu

Recently discovered, the route is a continuation of the Old Path. The road reaches Caeté and Sabará, which were also sources of gold for the Portuguese crown.

SIGNS

The Estrada Real’s signs situated on the main axis are made to guide your trip.
Here are some tips to avoid getting confused:
The top part of the sign is not an indicator of which way you should go. Go the way in which the sign is placed. In the event of a fork in the road, if the sign is on the left, go left too.
1
There is a tracing of the Estrada Real at all signs and the directions: “You are here” showing the geographic location of the place.
2
The triangular sign located below the sing contains all historical information about the location, geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude), nearby cities and a designated number which can be found on the navigation charts.
3
During your trip, it is rare to walk more than two KMs without seeing a sign, especially between forks in the road. Use this information as a reference to know if you are on the right path.
4
Some signs might be covered with vegetation. Pay attention to the maps.
